yes, it looks like this part is a 'special' Mercedes part.

But it might have also been made for other applications?

If your mechanic is good, he may find something to replace it.

Well, if your car runs & works with the later VTG, so much the better!
Let's hope it'll work for a long time! - although I can't see any reason why it should not work for years, if it does work now!
